Student Profile – Veronika Svatosova

Veronika from the Czech Republic chose to study Garden Design at Scotland’s Rural College because the course offered the perfect fusion of her two passions – nature and art.

“After spending two summers working in Brighton and studying first year of Tropical AgriSciences course at Czech University of Life Sciences, I wanted to experience what it is like to study abroad. I was also interested in taking an artier course as I missed creativity in my life. I looked up courses in Scotland since I knew a few people who studied here and had positive experiences. I found SRUC through the UCAS website and thought that Garden Design would be great to try out as it connected biology (plants) and art, my two favourite subjects at grammar school. Originally, this was only supposed to be a one-year break and I had the intension to return to Prague to finish the Tropical course. Well, I ended up graduating at SRUC four years later.”

“At SRUC, the international design project in Aix-en-Provence was an unforgettable experience. We were shown unusual ways of site surveying using various methods involving all senses. That really helped us to soak in the vibe of both the space we were designing and the whole city.

Show garden preparation and building required us to use different skills from sourcing and growing plants through construction to marketing and taught us how important team work is.

I’ve appreciated plant identification walks in the Botanic Gardens, practical lectures outside and in the greenhouse, and field trips to breath-taking gardens. Experience of working with real life clients and defending my own designs as part of some modules is helpful now in my job as I can reason the design and argue in its favour if needed.”

“I loved spending time behind drawing board in the design studio. The green houses with all available equipment and attached plots are very an important facility to all horticulture and garden design courses.”

“Since May I’m working as Landscape Development Officer for South Lanarkshire Council, designing playgrounds, community gardens, outdoor gyms and more. During my studies I’ve always felt I wanted to be part of a team and design projects for wider community rather than gardens for individuals. SRUC gave me very good starting base, and I’m still learning new things every day at work.”
