Student Profile – Natalie Cartner
Natalie Cartner from Langholm in Dumfries and Galloway always knew she wanted to have a career in agriculture having come from a farming background. Having discovered the Applied Animal Science course at SRUC, Natalie knew it was exactly the right course to lead her on to her chosen career paths.
“I wanted to choose a course that gave me plenty of options in whatever career choice I would make. Applied Animal Science covers all aspects from nutrition, animal welfare, laboratory practices, genetics and livestock practices. This broad range is what attracted me to picking this course. “
“I chose to study at SRUC as it had the course which suited my requirement the best. People who I have known to graduate from SRUC have gone into fields which I would like to go in. SRUC themselves also offer many career options within.
“Where the Kings Building campus is based, it is located just on the outskirts of the city centre. This gives the university more of a countryside feel despite being based in Scotland’s capital. Classes are easy to locate due to the monitor screen at the entrance displaying everything (including events and updates!). The Kings building campus has many onsite facilities such as cafes and socialising seating areas for the students to go to. It is also joined up with the Edinburgh university, so further facilities are made available to students at SRUC.”
“When I complete my course I would like to gain my own flock of MV accredited pedigree Texels. Then either go into consultancy such as working for QMS or Red Tractor. I am also interested in being a feed rep for company such as Tarff Valley or Davidson’s. But this course has allowed me to keep my options open!”
“For anyone who has commitments at home but would like to gain a degree, studying at the SRUC is possible! There are many site locations which are easy to get to by travelling. You do not have to move away to study!”
“The highlight of studying at SRUC is the people as it makes it such a friendly environment to go to. I have made what I know will be very long lasting friendships.”
