Stephen Moore – modern apprentice award
SRUC is celebrating Skills Development Scotland (SDS) Modern Apprenticeship week – March 6-10 2017, showcasing the benefits apprenticeships bring to individuals, businesses and the economy via their students achievements and successes.
We’re celebrating the achievements of Stephen Moore, an award-winning modern apprentice.
Stephen hadn’t even driven a tractor before starting work at Hamilton & Brothers (Bishopton).
But now he has completed a Modern Apprenticeship Level 2 in Land-based Engineering, is working towards a Level 3 and has just won a major national award.
After leaving school Stephen completed three year, full time course in Spray Painting, but found it hard to find a job. He tackled that head on by setting up his own vehicle painting company and approached Hamilton & Brothers looking for business.
He so impressed them that he became their valeter and painter, but swiftly began helping other mechanics, eventually taking on more tasks including pre delivery checks.
However life really changed for Stephen Moore when his employer offered him a Modern Apprenticeship in Agriculture Engineering, building his experience and qualifications through Level 2 and now 3.
Stephen studied at SRUC’s Oatridge campus on a block release programme over 2 years, for level 2, and now he is studying for a 1 year for level 3.
Very recently he was among other successful students from SRUC attending the annual Land-based and Aquaculture Awards presented by the rural training agency Lantra where he was recognised in the category for Service Engineers.
Complementing Stephen on his success Ken Smyth of Hamilton & Brothers commented:
“He started as a workshop assistant and soon proved himself useful helping other staff with repairs. In no time we noticed that when he wasn’t working he was missed. Stephen is now an essential member of the staff”.
For his part Stephen says:
“The more I learn about tractors the more passionate I am about them”.
Work based learning (Modern Apprenticeships and Scottish Vocational Qualifications-SVQ) is the benchmark for the land-based engineering sector; candidates attend regular blocks at college to enhance their knowledge and understanding and to develop the skills required to successfully service, maintain, diagnose and repair land based machinery.
On return to their workplace providers the students can practice and hone the skills they have developed in college within a real setting and under the stewardship of competent engineers. The value of the apprenticeship training is recognised throughout many sectors due to the blended learning approach which offers learners and employers real benefits.
