SRUC graduates and students lead GB Men’s Curling Team to Winter Olympics 2018
The British Olympic Association recently announced the Team GB Men’s Curling Team for the Winter Olympics which includes three SRUC alumni and one current student.
Team Smith, led by SRUC alumnus Kyle Smith, will be making their Olympic debut in Pyeong Chang in South Korea in February next year. Skip Kyle Smith will be joined by brothers Thomas and Glen Muirhead who, as well as Smith, graduated from the SRUC Edinburgh campus with a BSc in Agriculture. They will be joined by current BSc agriculture student Cameron Smith and Kyle Waddell.
Team Smith demonstrated their talent on tour in Canada this year becoming the first British men’s team ever to reach a Grand Slam final. They finished their season with a win over world number one ranked Team Edin (Sweden) in the final of the European Masters. The team were highly successful at junior level, collecting World Junior Championship bronze in 2012, gold in 2013 and silver the following year. Across the same period the team were also crowned Scottish Junior Champions three years running and won World Universiade silver in 2013.
The Olympic team will build up to the Winter Olympics by training at the new National Curling Academy in Stirling as well as attending competitions across Europe, North America and Asia.
