SRUC Advent Calendar: 12th December
Did you know that December 12th is Poinsettia day? The day marks the death of J.R. Poinsett, an American botanist who sent cutting of the poinsettia plant he discovered in southern Mexico home to his family in the USA. The red “petals” of the flower, which is very popular at this time of year for its Christmassy burst of colour, are actually just coloured leaves. The actual flowers of the plant are very unassuming small yellow structures found right in the centre of the leaves.
Although many people associate Horticulture solely with food crops such as strawberries and tomatoes, it is also an important tool for mitigating the effects of climate change via plant breeding, producing appropriate ornamental plants for urban greening, and improving biodiversity.
At SRUC we firmly believe that as well as having an in-depth and thorough knowledge of the horticulture industry, graduates must be equipped with the practical skills necessary for continued successful employability. The Horticulture industry contributes over £9billion to the UK economy each year and employs over 300,000 people.
