Students’ RAF floral display is a soaring achievement

Elmwood Campus created a stunning display to recognise and celebrate 100 years of the RAF and the work of RAFA (Royal Air Force Association) and their work in the community.

Cupar Community Council is the main sponsors of the annual carpet bedding display, which was showcased at Gardening Scotland in Ingliston and has now been dismantled and repositioned on the South Road into Cupar.

Because of its long running relationship with Cupar, SRUC’s Elmwood campus agreed to take over the planning and planting of the raised bed.

John Cunningham from Cupar in Bloom said,

“I enjoy working with the staff and students from SRUC at Elmwood.  Their hard work and enthusiasm shines through.  Despite having over 25 years experience of carpet bedding experience this has got to be one of my biggest challenges, two planting locations in two weeks. I have been involved from the start with the design, right through to putting in the last plant.  I look forward to working with the college again in the future.”

RAFA came to the college with the idea and asked that the design reflected and recognised the role of the RAF both nationally and locally.

Malcolm Hodgson, Wings Co-ordinator, RAFA, Leuchars Branch said,

“I would like to thank everyone for their involvement in this project.  There are a lot of ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen living locally and they are the reason we decided to undertake this endeavour.”

Phil Watkin, Horticulture department head at Elmwood campus said:

“We are delighted to be involved in this collaborative project with the RAF and RAFA, to recognise their commitment to the local community.  Carpet bedding is sadly becoming a dying art and the horticultural students have benefitted hugely from being involved in this project under the expert guidance of Andrew Kydd, their class tutor.”
