Mark Robertson, 32, used to work as bar staff for many years before changing paths to study HNC/HND Animal Care at SRUC Barony and progressing to University to study Animal biosciences with zoology.
Tell us a bit about your past career:
“I have been working in the hospitality industry for about 16 years, working late, long hours, about 50 hours a week on minimum wage. At the start when I was single I had some good times, met some good friends who were customers and work colleagues.”
What led you to make the decision to change your career path?
“I wasn’t happy anymore working in the restaurant and didn’t spend much time with my wife. I have always loved animals and want to learn more about the animal kingdom.”
Mark chose to study at SRUC Barony as it was close to his home. It has changed his life as he has had more time at home to be with his wife and pets, time to spend in the garden and not feeling as stressed and tired as before.
On his experience at SRUC, Mark said:
“It has been enjoyable, and I have met some nice people. It has been strange studying again after so long being in work, so a bit more relaxing now compared to working in a bar. I love working with the animals in the care centre. I also feel I have been welcomed to voice ideas and feedback to the staff.”
The three words Mark chose to describe his life-changing experience were “enjoyable, happy and accomplished”.
