MA Land-based Engineering: “I really contribute to all areas of the business”

Mathew Howie currently works at J T Walkers Agricultural Engineering , completing his Modern Apprenticeship with SRUC in Land-Based Engineering (Agricultural Machinery). Mathew said “I was interested in tractors from a young age. During my fifth year at high school I was successful in getting a summer job with J T Walker Agricultural Engineering. I was later offered a full time Modern Apprenticeship that was close to home. I have never looked back!”

“Currently I am involved in the service, maintenance and repairs of a range of agricultural equipment from tractors to forage harvesters and muck spreaders. I am apart of a small team at J T Walker Agriculture Engineers so I really contribute to all elements of the business.”

“I have benefited from my time at SRUC learning aspects such as transmission systems. This element of the course exposed me to the engineering drawings, which are common in workshop manuals. I can now look at a manual and recognise common parts and components as well as understanding their operational systems. I also studied transmission at college and therefore was able to lead the other engineers on the operating principles and fault finding processes.”

Fraser Wilson, head of the land based engineering department at SRUC describes Mathew as “a model student during his studies. Mathew worked extremely hard to pass his theory exams, which didn’t come easy. However, the revision and work he carried out in his own time paid dividends as he was regularly in the top achievers in his cohort.” Fraser continues “I was impressed when he would return to college and update me on the tasks carried out during his time at work. He compiled a strong portfolio of evidence to demonstrate his competency.”

Mathew describes his future plans: “Further down the line I may like to expand my horizons. This may be in a larger dealership or perhaps running my own business. However, at the moments I am more than happy to apply my trade and learn from the team at J T Walker. I feel like I still have a lot to learn and this is one of the most respected and competent engineers in the area. I hope to improve and within this team at J T Walkers, I will undoubtedly do that.”
