Kyle McClung, Golf Management
Kyle McClung, who lives in Alva and is a greenkeeper at Gleneagles, completed the NC Greenkeeping at SRUC’s Elmwood campus and is now close to completing the HNC Golf Management by distance learning through SRUC.
Kyle, who has played golf since the age of 10, graduated with a Psychology degree before deciding to turn his attentions towards a new career path. He heard about the Greenkeeping and turf management courses offered at Elmwood through word of mouth and enjoyed his first year studying at the entry level before securing employment as a greenkeeper at Turnberry.
“One of the tutors at Elmwood, Paul Miller, was very influential in my career. His passion for the subject was infectious. He made you want to find out more and he always went the extra mile.”
After a year Kyle gained employment in his home club, Wigtownshire County Golf Club, where he worked for 2 years before moving on to world renowned Gleneagles Golf Club where he balances working full-time with studying. When asked about juggling a career and returning to education Kyle said, “It can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. A lot of it is about time management and self-motivation.”
Kyle said he would recommend the industry to others. “The opportunities are huge, especially for those wishing to work abroad. I know fellow students who have travelled the world.”
Kyle added that he would like to continue with his education and progress to management level. “I can see myself working at a higher position in a smaller club. That’s the thing about education, you can pick up the knowledge that gives you the tools to work well with the resources you have.”
