Insurance Broker to Animal Scientist
Polly Elliot-Pyle, 30, worked as an insurance broker for many years after graduating from Heriot Watt University in 2012. Her childhood dream of working with animals never left her, having had aspirations of being the next David Attenborough in her younger years.
After a family bereavement and some self-reflection, Polly made the decision to change her career path and live out her childhood dream by making the decision to enrol for the BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Science programme at the Edinburgh campus.
Her choice was motivated by the subjects included on the course, from microbiology to livestock studies as well as the hands-on approach offered by SRUC. “The course seemed like the best way of getting a broad education in animal sciences rather than limiting myself to a single type of animal or specialist area”
Polly found the science focussed aspects of the course daunting at first, “I won’t pretend it wasn’t a challenge to get back into the swing of being a student again…but I love learning new things with the added bonus of knowing this is what I really want to do.”
Polly has managed to work part-time alongside her study commitments and couldn’t be happier with her decision to take a chance and change direction, “I feel like I’ve got direction again. The work I am putting in is for my future and my career and there is nothing more satisfying”
