Grow Careers Event Blossoms at The Botanical Gardens
Wednesday 20th February saw Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens host a series of speeches from world renowned horticulturalists as part of the ever popular ‘Grow Careers’ day.
The event, aimed at raising awareness of current affairs in horticulture and landscaping as well as what the future holds for the industry, was attended by around 300 people. Aside from listening to various speeches, attendees were welcome to speak to others in the industry including representatives from SRUC during a networking and lunch session.
The first speaker of the day was Professor Owen Doyle, Head of Horticulture, Landscape and Sportsturf Management at the University of Dublin. His speech gave an alternative view of Horticulture aimed at breaking down preconceptions surrounding his discipline. Professor Doyle’s talk, titled New Careers in Horticulture: Life Beyond the Garden was very popular among an audience filled with people from all walks of life and with a variety of levels of experience in horticulture.
“I hope that the description and pathways of how horticulture can be used, to improve the physical, psychological and mental health of humans that I presented in my talk will have inspired some who attended to come into horticulture and to those already studying this subject that it reinforced their decision to choose this profession and give them additional avenues to explore in their career”.
