Garden Design: Heath Urquhart
Heath Urquhart from New Zealand came to the UK to study Garden and Greenspace Design at SRUC from a background in farming. Plants and landscapes had always been a big influence in his life and so he decided it was time to make a career out of it.
Heath chose to study at SRUC in Edinburgh as, not only is Edinburgh his favourite city, but the course ticked all of the boxes he was looking for in terms of practical real world design knowledge.
“SRUC offers a diverse range of people and perspectives and the open willingness to share and encourage ideas. The ability to openly debate and discuss solutions to a wide range of issues. A highlight for me has been the opportunity to be part of the team that built our gold medal winning show garden at Gardening Scotland in 2017.”
“At the moment I am fortunate to currently be working part-time for two companies associated with my course, Binny Plants, a specialist nursery, and Watergems, a respected landscaper. After the course I want to go further into the design side of landscapes and gain from the depth of knowledge in the UK.”
“Life on campus can be hectic but it is rewarding with awesome staff and classmates who will be lifelong friends.
Don’t see your time at SRUC just as a qualification, use it to network and gain experience in as much of your chosen field as you can. There is a wealth of opportunities waiting to be discovered – push your comfort zones.”
