From Bar to Baa
Laura Bell, 28, previously worked in hospitality but decided to change her path and return to education. Laura decided to study Applied Animal Science at SRUC Edinburgh in order to pursue a career within animal behaviour.
Tell us a bit about your past career:
Over the past 13 years I have worked in numerous roles throughout the hospitality industry, such as housekeeping waitressing, chef work and bartending. throughout this time I have held supervisor and managerial positions. I spent many years working in rural areas and small towns. I moved to the city 5 years ago to work with one of my oldest friends on a start up retro sweet company. During this time I was also working in the city as a waitress and a PR person for a charity run night club in the old town. after around a year of working with my friend, I moved back to bartending full time and got a second waitressing job leaving my previous restaurant.
What led you to make the decision to change your career path?
After working in hospitality for so long I was looking for a change. I was brought up in the countryside and have always wanted to move back into a rural setting. finding work without any current experience would be extremely difficult. After studying on an access course for life science at Edinburgh college I chose to apply to SRUC on the Applied Animal Science degree.
Why did you choose to study at SRUC?
Knowing I wanted to pursue a career with animals, SRUC has many good links and pathways into agricultural job opportunities. The course itself seemed to be well structured towards giving practical understanding of the sciences involved within agriculture.
Tell us a bit about your experience at SRUC?
So far I have had a fairly good experience it was pretty slow to get going at the start of the semester but after the first couple of weeks it got fairly intense. Having all the first block assessments over the one week was pretty tough.
How has your decision changed your life?
Coming to sruc I have met some lovely people who I hope to stay in contact with for a long time to come. But as I am at the beginning of my studies not much has changed apart from my stress levels are higher and my bank balance is fairly non existent.
