From Banker to Garden Designer
Margaret Wright worked for RBS for more than 30 years, latterly as a project manager after joining the bank straight from school age 17. In 2016 she was given the option of voluntary redundancy and jumped at the chance to take her career in a new direction.
“I wanted a change from working in a corporate environment to something I really felt passionate about. I’ve always loved gardening and did an evening course about 10 years ago and then ended up designing and building my own garden from scratch and was hooked”
Margaret is studying HND Garden Design at the Edinburgh Campus with a view to progressing to BSc (Hons) Garden & Greenspace design in 2019. She says “The course looked varied and interesting and I thought it would give me a good breadth of knowledge and skills to make this a full-time career and hopefully a new business venture”
As a mature student Margaret has found new friends and a love of learning, she’s been most enthusiastic about “meeting such a great class of students and gaining so much knowledge about horticulture; I’ve really embraced coming into education later in life”.
“I definitely feel that as I’m studying a topic I really enjoy, I am using my time effectively and doing something for myself and life feels a lot more relaxed and less stressed”
