Forgework: Holly Loftus
Holly came to SRUC to study forgework, something she had wanted to learn more about for many years. Having come from what might seem quite an unrelated background, with a career in working on community projects, Holly decided to go down a different path.
Holly chose the course as it formed a great first step for her to begin her dream career working in a forging environment such as a smithy workshop. Holly said “I had very low confidence in forging at the beginning of the course, but with the support of the brilliant staff and the facilities available, it didn’t take long for me to build up my skillset and begin tackling more difficult tasks.”
“I was very worried that I wouldn’t be able to pass, but over a few weeks my portfolio began to take shape and look quite impressive, which is something that I am very proud of. Realising that we all start somewhere is a very important first step to take; no one masters a skill overnight.”
“My favourite thing about the course was the style of teaching. It was always exciting and fresh, especially the time trials, which would push us to work faster and be more productive, whilst maintaining the same levels of precision and concentration. I would 100% recommend this course to anyone who wants to gain confidence and increase their skills in forging.”
“Having completed the course, I am now doing work experience making knives. The company I work for forges and finishes all the blades, so it’s a dream come true for me.”
