Catherine Devaney – Professional Cookery
Catherine Devaney started her professional life as a lawyer in Edinburgh, but after moving to Fife and falling in love with the surroundings, she made a slight career change and followed her passion for food.
“I can’t speak highly enough of the hospitality department at SRUC. I gained my Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery this year, as a mature student pursuing a career change. The staff are hugely experienced in industry which, combined with a passion to pass on their skills to new chefs, made studying there an incredible experience. I feel very lucky to have had such a practical, rigorous and thorough training from some of the industry’s best chef lecturers.”
“I was encouraged to take part in competitions and was part of a team to win second place in the Brakes Student Hospitality Challenge, a Scotland wide competition. Other highlights included cooking at the Scottish Parliament, a masterclass with a Michelin starred chef and experience cooking for 180 people at The Old Course Hotel. Not only that but through the department’s industry connections studying here has opened up fantastic opportunities for me. “
So what’s next for Catherine post-SRUC?
“I am now following my passion for cooking and feel incredibly lucky to now be working in one of the area’s best restaurants and also gaining experience with a highly regarded event caterer. I am in the process of setting up my own event catering business and am very excited about the future. None of this would have been possible without the tuition, support and encouragement of the hospitality team at SRUC.”
We are very proud of Catherine’s achievements and wish her well in her future endeavours!
