Arthur Johnson – a life-changing experience
Arthur came to SRUC having struggled to find his passion professionally; he opted to study Rural Skills due to his love of the outdoors. Having been interested in outdoors activities such as fly-fishing from the age of 8, Arthur knew that he would enjoy this course and he wasn’t disappointed. He graduated from the course in 2017 and has since moved onto study his HNC in Countryside and Environmental Management at SRUC’s Oatridge campus.
“I heard about the course from some friends who had also studied with SRUC. They highly recommended it and my mind was made up upon speaking to the lecturers. It was a life changing experience for me; it gave me a focus and something to work towards, whilst also satisfying the desire to follow my passion in an outdoor-related subject.”
“My favourite part of the course was the practical nature. I’ve always loved working with my hands and it formed a great basis for what I’ve gone on to do since, it has helped me with aspects of my current HNC. Ultimately, the course was fun and the support from staff was fantastic, I felt so at home in my surrounding and this ultimately made me work harder and enjoy the work more.”
Arthur’s progression onto the HNC has brought its challenges; he has however faced them with the same attitude and determination as he did his NC previously.
Arthur eventually wants to become a park ranger in one of Scotland’s many national parks, somewhere where he can “enjoy the outdoors and make a real difference.”
