Angus Ferguson, Agricultural Consultant

“Like many people leaving school I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to take a year out before applying for courses and, having deliberated hard, I applied for a number of Engineering courses as well as Agriculture at SRUC’s Aberdeen Campus. Two weeks prior to starting a course in Aeronautical Engineering, and following a chat with my father about my future career, I decided that agriculture was to be my main vocation as it was where my passion was. Fortunately SRUC managed to squeeze me in to the first year of the course. I spent four years at Aberdeen and left with an Honours degree in Agriculture under my belt.”

“Looking back, I am very glad I made the decision to study Agriculture at SRUC. The Aberdeen campus is truly fantastic; I loved that you were still in the countryside but close enough to town for when you wanted to enjoy the nightlife. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and made some lifelong friends who helped me come out of my shell.”

“After graduating I was lucky enough to gain employment at home in Uist working on a European funded project which looked to sustain traditional agricultural practices such as using seaweed to fertilise crops. After 2 years on that project a job opportunity came up for an Agricultural Consultant with SAC Consulting (the commercial business arm of SRUC) based on Uist and I jumped at it. I was lucky enough to secure the position and years later I still thoroughly enjoy my job.”

“The education I received at SRUC provided me with a good basis of knowledge in a wide variety of areas which helped to build on the practical knowledge which I had gained working at home and on other farms. This without doubt helped me in securing the job. Working for SAC Consulting offers challenges on a daily basis which is something I really enjoy as it provides a sense of reward in your employment.”
