Alicja Kaczmarczyk, Environmental Management
Alicja Kaczmarczyk, originally from Poland, came to SRUC to study Environmental Management.
As a mature student with a long break from full time education, the decision to change career path wasn’t easy.
“I wanted to study a degree with embedded principles of sustainability. At the time no other institution offered a degree that would combine and explore all the different areas that are essential for sustainable management of our environment. The breadth of subjects studied at SRUC as part of this degree is the perfect synergy between environmental, social and economic aspects of environmental management. I was attracted to the course because of its multidisciplinary approach to environmental management. The course does not solely focus on one subject area such as ecology and conservation, but integrates economics and policy modules along with more science based subjects. I looked at other courses which were deeply rooted in ecology but knew that the array of modules provided by the course will best prepare me for many job opportunities, and more importantly help me to develop my career around something that is meaningful to me, the community and the planet as a whole.”
“I chose SRUC because of its renowned reputation as a leading land based educator. I wanted to study at an institution that had both academic and research credentials. In my opinion, being taught by lecturers who also undertake research and consultancy work brings many benefits; it enables students to hear from lecturers who are exposed to real-life work experience and provides opportunities to get involved in some research projects. As a rather small HEI, SRUC seemed like a relaxed and friendly place to study.”
“As a small college, you get the opportunity to know your tutors well. It’s a place where lecturers know your name, your story and, are happy and have time to talk to you. Studying at a college where education has more of a personal touch is invaluable to me. I feel like I am a part of something rather than a student lost among the crowds and numbers.”
Alicja intends to pursue a Master’s degree which would further elaborate on the relationships between development, society and the environment. Her goal is to work within the social sector bridging the gap between community and environmental protection, particularly in developing countries.
